About Dental Implants

A dental implant is a small titanium post placed in the jawbone to act as the root of a missing tooth. Once healed, it supports a crown, bridge or full-arch bridge.

Options

Ways implants can replace teeth

  • Single implant & crown — one implant, one crown, without preparing the neighbouring teeth
  • Implant bridge — two or more implants support several teeth in a row. More
  • Immediate implant — where conditions allow, the implant goes in on the day the tooth comes out
  • 3-On-6™ full arch — fixed teeth for a whole jaw. More
Treatment process

Your implant, step by step

A typical single implant. Your plan may differ.

Implant consultation
1. Consultation

We assess your oral health, confirm whether an implant suits you and explain the process, risks and costs.

Reviewing scans
2. Scanning

X-rays and digital scans build a 3D model used to plan the implant's exact position.

Implant surgery
3. Surgery

The implant is placed under local anaesthetic. Sedation is available if you're anxious.

Healing period
4. Healing

Over weeks to months the implant bonds with the bone. A temporary is fitted for front teeth.

Final crown fitted
5. Final crown

An abutment and custom crown or bridge are fitted and adjusted for a comfortable bite.

Who is suitable

Most adults who have lost a tooth, or have one that can't be saved, can be assessed for an implant. What matters is:

  • Enough healthy bone, or bone that can be rebuilt with grafting
  • Healthy gums, or gum disease that has been treated
  • Your general health and medications
  • Not smoking, or being willing to stop
  • Keeping up with cleaning and reviews

If an implant isn't the best option, we'll explain the alternatives — a conventional bridge or a partial denture.

Risks and limitations

Swelling, bruising and discomfort are common for a few days. Less common risks include infection, nerve injury causing altered sensation, sinus involvement in the upper jaw and damage to neighbouring teeth. Implants can fail to integrate or be lost later, especially with smoking, uncontrolled diabetes or poor cleaning. Crowns can chip or loosen over time.
